BUNKER
The many bunkers by the beach are a relic from World War II, when the Germans built them as part of the Atlantic Wall to protect them from the invasion of the Allies.
Information
They were built several hundred meters up in the dunes. The sea has since eaten away at the coast and gradually exposed the piles so that almost all of them now lie on the beaches.
However, some are still well hidden between the dunes and can be fun to try to find. However, some are on private land and require permission from the owner.
The bunkers are exciting, but old and traffic on them must be done with caution.
Here are a few tips:
- Never enter a bunker - it can tip. It may seem large and solid, but the erosion of the sea affects it and the substrate on which it rests on a daily basis. (After some storms, several have turned their heads.
- The bunkers are full of cracks, holes and rusted metal parts. Also watch out when swimming, as some bunkers are below sea level
If you want to get up close to the bunkers and hear about their history, tours of the large Krylen and Ringelnatter bunker facilities north of Søndervig are organized almost all year round.
